Teaching English online doesn’t imply opening a book and studying one topic after the other, aim to be a conversational English teacher and get paid to speak and help students practice speaking English.
What sort of English teacher are you? Do your students book subscriptions after trial lessons or you always get once-off students that never return? Do your students have fun during your lessons and compliment your teaching skills?
If your response to any of these questions was negative, then this article is for you.

I would like to emphasize the fact that, you as the teacher/ leader of the lessons, determine the direction of your lessons and your business overall. You, as the teacher, determine whether, both you and your students are going to have fun or not. If you loathe and resent teaching, its up to you to put the tips I share into practice or complain daily about not getting the results you expect.
Rebranding is essential, and if you haven’t been doing well as an online teacher since you started, its never too late to set goals and change your perspective and the direction of your business. Infact, rebranding is an ongoing process that has been a major reason to my transition from being an online English teacher to becoming a coach for English teachers and grooming individuals who have never been teachers before, to become the best and successful.
MY STORY;
HOW I BECAME A BETTER TEACHER
Please note that the advice and tips I share are tried and tested, this is how I got to where I am now. Simple organisation, time management and planning attributed to helping me becoming a better teacher and allowed me to enjoy the time I have had with my students.
When I started teaching, I had no direction I didn’t know what I was doing, I didn‘t have a daily routine and I was just going where the wind blows. I always made excuses, blamed students if anything went wrong and I didn’t take responsibility for any failures and I would rather blame it on ``Preply “, which is the platform, I have always been teaching on.
This went on for a while until I decided to do something about it, I love reading and watching motivational and transformational videos on Youtube so because of that, most of the videos I watched pushed me to want to change my story, my circumstances and the way I did things, and that meant taking charge of the direction of my journey of teaching English online to international students. I enjoyed earning an income from it and I told myself that, since I had decided to do this in the long run, I had some planning to do.
I resorted to planning a daily routine and that meant that I had to stop waking up 30minutes before my first lesson and be more intentional about my day and now I wake up at 3am, as I realized that I am more productive early morning. You don`t have to wake up at the same time, but I encourage you to be more intentional if you want to see changes in your life and business. Set an alarm to wake up and leave room to plan your day before classes.
Not being organized, avoiding setting goals, dreading waking up and not having a daily routine;
- affects your overall performance as a teacher, which can lead you to think that teaching is not worth pursuing
- students can sense your lack of direction and not return after trial lessons
- you get burnt-out
- affects your sales and income
- prolongs your growth among many other reasons
On the other hand, staying organized and planning your day will allow you to experience growth more prompt.
WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS
I need you to stop reading and get a pen and paper/notebook and plan the roadmap to your success story as a teacher. Aim for a better version of yourself this year, whether you are teaching English short term or you are planning to do this in the long run.
- Why am I teaching English online?
- What are my top 3 goals that I need to achieve?
- For how long do I want to teach English?
- How much do I want to earn per day/week/ month?
- What do I want t use the money for?
- What time should I wake up everyday to achieve these results?
- What must I do daily to achieve these results?
- What kind of teacher do I want to be?
- What should I do to become an outstanding and unique teacher?
- What is the deadline to all these goals?
As the old adage says, when we fail to plan, we plan to fail. If you have decided to teach English online, then I urge you to go all-in.
All the best on your journey.
